Why our dog treats don’t contain artificial preservatives

Why our dog treats don’t contain artificial preservatives

At Wuffy, we believe dog treats should be made more like real food.

That means simple ingredients, small batches, and no artificial preservatives. It also means our treats are not designed to sit on a shelf for months or years, unless of course they are freeze dried.

Fresh food has a natural lifespan. So do fresh dog treats.

What do preservatives do in dog treats?

Preservatives help food last longer by slowing spoilage and protecting freshness during storage and shipping.

Some pet foods use synthetic preservatives such as BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin. You will never find these in Wuffy treats.

Natural preservatives include ingredients such as mixed tocopherols, a form of vitamin E, vitamin C, and rosemary extract. They help protect freshness without relying on synthetic preservatives.

Wuffy treats are baked, dehydrated, or freeze-dried in small batches using simple, familiar ingredients. We preserve freshness through careful preparation, proper packaging, and freezing. When needed, we may also use a naturally derived preservative, such as the ascorbic acid already present in the applesauce used in our Apple Cinnamon treats.

Why we choose fresh dog treats

We started Wuffy because we wanted simpler treats for our own dogs. When we read ingredient labels, we found long lists filled with chemical preservatives, fillers, and ingredients we did not recognize.

We knew dog treats could be simpler.

Our baked recipes contain five ingredients or less, and our meat treats contain just one. Keeping our recipes simple allows you to know exactly what you are giving your dog.

It also means our treats have a real expiration date.

Should fresh dog treats mold?

A fresh treat is not meant to last forever.

Over time, especially when exposed to heat or moisture, baked dog treats can naturally develop mold. That does not mean anything went wrong. It means the treats were made without ingredients designed to make them last indefinitely.

Of course, you should never give your dog a treat that shows mold, smells unusual, or appears spoiled. When in doubt, throw it out.

The best way to avoid waste is to follow the expiration date on the package and store your treats properly.

How to keep Wuffy treats fresh

Enjoy Wuffy treats by the expiration date printed on the package. Refrigeration can help baked treats stay fresh longer, and freezing is the best option when you are not planning to use them right away.

Keep the bag sealed and store it away from heat, sunlight, and moisture.

Wuffy treats thaw quickly, so you can take out what you need and keep the rest frozen until your dog is ready for more.

Freezing is our natural preservative

Freezing helps us protect freshness without adding preservatives.

Some Wuffy treats are frozen after they’re made so we can ship them at their freshest. They’re thawed before shipping and arrive fresh and ready to enjoy.

It’s the same simple idea people use for homemade food: make it fresh, store it properly, and enjoy it while it’s good.

Simple ingredients. A shorter shelf life. A trade-off we believe in.

We could make treats that last longer on the counter, but that would not be Wuffy.

We would rather make fresh dog treats in small batches, use ingredients you recognize, and give you clear instructions for keeping them fresh.

No artificial preservatives. No mystery ingredients. Just really good treats made for dogs.
